Teeny Little Super Guy is a Buddha

There are many times in life that we are profoundly moved by a piece of artwork. It could be a song, a painting, a dance. I have been moved by all of these at one point or another in my life. Sometimes, I won’t even know that something has “jiggled my brain” until later on in life, recalling the feeling.

One such piece of artwork was this song lyric that I first heard when I was 4 years old:

“Teeny Little Super Guy
Pops right up before your eye
He's no bigger than your thumb
Don't look in the sky
Don't look in the sea
He's inside of you and me
You can't tell a hero by his size
He’s just a Teeny Little Super Guy”

You might giggle, you might scoff, but to me this is profound! It’s an intro song to a Sesame Street bit about a drawing of a guy on a plastic cup. This Teeny Little Super Guy would offer sage advice to other Teeny characters drawn on kitchen utensils. To me Teeny Little Super Guy was so wise! Teeny Little Super Guy is a Buddha.

Jiggle your brain yet?

Ah, but here’s the part that brings it home further…

“Don’t look in the sky, Don’t look in the sea, He’s inside of you and me…”

Yes. You. You have within you amazingness! You are a Buddha. You have a wise nature about you that others admire. You do! We all do. We are all little Buddhas! We are all made of stardust, we all have a divine spark!

To out there?

There’s more...

“You can’t tell a hero by his size…”

This part is for you social action folks! We all have the ability to be a hero in our own way. Tiny size, tiny voice, tiny help, it all adds up. This part speaks of being an upstander in a sea of bystanders, and how that tiny splash could have ripples that start a movement.

The part that says, “Pops right up before your eyes…” asks you to keep yourself aware to these facts: you are a Buddha, they are a Buddha, you can be an upstander, they can be an upstander… Anyone and everyone you meet has within them a Teeny Little Super Guy…

“Teeny Little Super Guy
Pops right up before your eye
He's no bigger than your thumb
Don't look in the sky
Don't look in the sea
He's inside of you and me
You can't tell a hero by his size
He’s just a Teeny Little Super Guy”
